Holiday Entertaining: [How-To]

I visited my local Pottery Barn this morning for a class on holiday entertaining, and I loved it! I took away lots of great tips for creating tablescapes and am certainly planning to put them to good use this holiday season. But I cannot in good conscience keep them to myself :)

Tip #1: Place books beneath table runners for an elevated centerpiece area

This is so creative, and is something they do in the store to make everything look fabulous.

Tip #2: Include table accessories of varying heights

This means don't be afraid to include low-to-the-table place card holders, medium sized platters, tall candles and a candelabra to create something really impressive. Its better to build your table in this way, instead of keeping all accessories low, or all tall.

Tip #3: Use seasonal items from nature to secure candles within hurricanes

We've all seen people use coffee beans, but what about acorns, pine needles, evergreen leaves, bittersweet or colorful maple leaves? Maybe corn kernels or husks? I'm inspired to get more creative with my candles.

Tip #4: You can never have enough gourds. This is pretty self explanatory.

Tip #5: Place a patterned runner above a solid one for added interest

I've also been seeing a lot of people doing this with floor rugs ... but that's another post.

Tip #6: This is a big one! Search for 'Prop Shop' at Potterybarn.com to see what props from the store are for sale online.

Tip #7: Include any/all of the items listed below:

Tip #8: For those living in small spaces, (and for those of us without the grand, expansive dining table), create an asymmetrical tablescape.

I automatically assumed that a centerpiece has to be just that - centered. Not always! If you're cooking for two or three (which many of my peers will be doing before heading home to see family) arrange over-sized candles and accessories to one side of the table and assemble place settings on the other.

Shop Saturday: [Recent Additions]

Over the years I've turned into the 'I'll think about it' shopper. I'm always 'thinking' about things, and very rarely pulling out my wallet. I really want to love what I bring home, and love what I spend my money on. Not to mention that there are electricity and cable and rent bills to be payed. So when I do 'splurge' on something, it's going to be a piece that lasts and one that I'll enjoy year after year - regardless of NYC fashion trends.

This past weekend I found two things I'm very excited about, so I thought I'd share them with you all. I love the above scarf and these glitzy-yet-subtle earrings. I snagged them last weekend during an impromptu Anthropologie shopping trip. Honestly, it's been very hard for me not to wear both every day this week.

I love the heavy, antique quality of the Marigolds Scarf, which feels like a piece that could have been passed down through the years - and one that will stick around for years to come. For those of you considering the addition of something cozy this fall, I'd highly recommend this - which actually wears better as a shawl because of the size. It's huge!

The Glinted Posts are exactly what I was looking for, and we all know how wonderful Anthro's ever changing earring collection can be. These hang slightly below the ears, and add a little something special to my casual, un-glitzy outfits.

I've worn them together - with a black long-sleeve tee, skinny jeans and leather boots.

I've been obsessed with the simple beauty of clutches lately. They're so unexpected and beautiful, quite the opposite from the beaten up canvas tote bag I drag all over Chicago. I'm even guilty of bringing it out with me at night, just because its easy. I'm starting to think that dragging 15 pounds of junk around at night is just silly - when all you really need is your iphone, house keys and small card case. I'm safe from the heat as I type, but this tidal wave of upper 90's tempratures has me yearning for a day on Lake Michigan. The above picture was taken from my backyard in Milwaukee, right in front of the giant 'bluff' dropoff as we called it. These were the two colors I saw everyday when I'd look out from our kitchen. Today they've inspired me to search for spaces that bring bright greens and blues indoors, but in unconventional ways.

I find these spaces and furniture accents bright and energetizing. What a great way to stay chipper long after the summer months fade. If a bold subway tile backspash is too daunting (and permanent!), furniture has the same cool, summery effect.

Interior Design Mashup: [Industrial Lighting}

I haven't always loved the industrial aesthetic. In fact, a year ago it was one of my least favorite ways to create a space. But over the past year I've spent a considerable about of time around the style and have changed my tune. These days, I find it incredibly interesting and refreshing. And its the most incredible when combined with other styles. Like the many antique farm tables included in the images above, or a crispy white living room.

No one would ever expect you to bring in a shadeless bulb or a chandelier fashioned from repurposed copper pipes -- but you should do it! Or at least consider it and do your research before nixing. Have a great evening, all!

Chollah wood branches with green airplants, a gorgeous wood and metal table, hand carved wood candlesticks via Anthropologie, and a slowly setting sun make this tablescape simply spectacular. Succulents add amazing texture to the wood and metal aesthetic. Just beautiful!

Hope you had a good weekend! I loved Kenny Chesney -- probably one of the best concerts I've been to. If you love country like me, I strongly encourage you to look up his tour dates a snag a few tickets. Such an amazing entertainer! My favorite tunes, plus Mike McCarthy bringing out the Superbowl championship trophy during Boys Of Fall (the concert was in Green Bay in Lambeau field) made for an amazing evening I'll never forget.

Room Of The Day: [Our Living Room/Kitchen]

The new place! I've told many that I'd share pictures, and since our internet is officially up and running, enjoy a few (from my cell phone unfortunately!). As I'm sure you've noticed, I love home interiors and absolutely adored picking out and setting everything up with J. Even all the Ikea assembling! Which I admit, was a bit of a tussle. We had the blisters to prove it!

Since we're near Lake Michigan, the living room became somewhat nautical with the blue striped loveseat and wicker baskets around the television. But, to maintain a bit of masculinity, we chose to have black wood furniture though out. The trick is to compromise gals! When moving in, remember that it's their home too. This was a little tough for me early on. What do you mean you don't want a floral shabby chic bedspread and an extensive collection of antique mixing bowls? We have a few more items to get, including a headboard in the bedroom and hanging storage in the closet. Other than that, all moved in and ready to get accustomed to life together.

It may look like were all grown up, but it's just a ruse I promise! We're still the same teenage jokesters we were back in high school.

Fresh flowers and french doors, together. My dream of owning a flower shop/interior design studio has been on my mind for quite a while now, and I can't imagine the interior without a pair of bright white french doors separating rooms. Happy Weekend: [Springtime Blooms]

It's springtime! Thank goodness. I really needed the blustery Chicago weather to subside, and a little sunshine on my face. This time of year I can't help but think of my childhood home in Wisconsin. At the start of May my front yard was always filled with the flowers show above. I'm not sure what the name of these trees are (does anyone know?) but they would hibernate all winter long to reveal big, blossoming branches once the weather warmed up. I took hundreds of pictures of them the spring before we moved away.

Springtime makes me think of my first home often. I regularly wonder if the family that moved in appreciates the lovely little intricacies it offers. Do they spend time on the creaky upstairs deck in the summertime? Do they love the blooming May trees as much as I did? Though there's no way of knowing for sure, I do hope so.

Here's to it officially being Spring (I ate my lunch outside this week!) and to the lifelong memories of home that we'll always have, no matter how old we get, or where we move.

Apartment Search: [Wall Color Choices]

We found a place! So relieved to be through with all the searching and time-sensitive applications. And what's best of all? I got to give my input on the interior paint color. What are your thoughts on these three splatters? I have a recent obsession with gray hues on walls, as shown above. These will really make the white moldings stand out - and there are white cabinets in the kitchen, hurray! Small but necessary detail to me, which will be great with the walls too.

Sadly no pics of the unit yet, but I'll share later on this month. We landed on a one bedroom just minutes from work, with a balcony and view of Lake Michigan. Though it's a bit removed from all the downtown hot spots, I'm excited to look at home as a daily retreat from the busy Chicago streets. Now, we both live on top of bars, long-lined night clubs, and honking intersections. A little peace and quiet at home will be nice.

Here's a fun game: If you were heading to Westminster Abbey tomorrow, what would you wear to tie the knot? And remember, nothing is too extravagent for a future queen.

My answer is the gorg Marchesa gown worn by Kate Hudson in a past issue of Harper's Bazaar. I remember seeing this dress and thinking - my goodness. Kitchen Envy: [Light Cabinets and Counters]

I'm in apartment mode. I've been searching endlessly for a place to call home for the next year (my boyfriend and I are moving in together as of June 1st!), but have found that finding a place with everything we want has been a bit of a tussle. This kitchen is bright and cheerful and very close to what I'd love, if we come across it this weekend. There's just something about those counter tops, the EAT letters and the white cabinets. I love this combo.

We looked at a place a few weekends ago, as I mentioned in an earlier post, that was just beautiful! And very similar to this space, but just out of our ideal Chicago neighborhood and slightly above our budget. It broke my heart to pass on it, but I have faith that another, more fitting place will magically appear one of these days. Poof! *Preferably sooner than later! Crossing my fingers for better luck this weekend, but I'm learning that this process is not as easy and painless as I had originally thought. Places go off the market quickly, condo owners refuse to make paint changes, and seemingly great apartments are always missing one tiny detail or another. Any one else struggling with an apartment search?

I'll keep you updated, and will be sure to share some blackberry pics as we tour this weekend. Oh -- and don't even get me started on meshing design aesthetics! Posts on creating a man-friendly space (while maintaining my love of pastels) to come later on.

Weekend Wishes: [On Easter]

Headed home for the weekend. Hope you all have a wonderful Easter, and enjoy the warmer weather. Hopefully, somewhere, the weather is warming and the sun is out! Sadly, Chicago is not currently one of those places, but a girl can hope.

I love Easter for many reasons, one of them being that I love pastels. Stupid, I know! But they're perfect in my closet, as a bed spread, for dishes in a kitchen ... there's just something cheerful about these barely-there colors. Add in a plethora of synthetic green grass, a collection of plastic, breakable eggs, and my Mom telling me she found bunny tracks in the kitchen, and you've got one heck of a holiday :) Remember, I am 22! She does it every year -- and I admit, I'd be a bit dissapointed if she didn't pretend he left his carrot behind. Did you see this carrot here before?! Amazing!

Here's to catching the early train home, and enjoying quality time with family. Today and everyday I am grateful for all that they've done for me, and the immense joy that they bring to my life.

Lace-inspired pottery is a big favorite of mine these days. The beauties above are by the very talented, Boston-based Isabella Abramson -- and I'm truly in love with their delicate form. Light flows right through them, and makes lovely shadows on the table. All of her pieces are made from milky white porcelain. If not for a fruit bowl in your kitchen, then maybe a catch-all for jewelry in the bathroom? Maybe not anything at all - since its highly likely that anything I'd keep inside would be far less beautiful than the bowl itself.

So simple and iconic. I have a feeling items like these will be coveted by our grandchildren someday - but only once they turn 22 and truly appreciate the timelessness of Tory Burch and others (even then I might not be able to let it go!)

I came across this turnlock closure wallet in Nordstrom recently, and fell quickly in love with every little detail. You can see that it is classic and simple -- but what you cant see via blog post is the silky, slightly weathered leather that made me think, 'I'm never putting you down.' These beautiful shots via JCrew mean our cherished summer months are not long off! And with the changing of the seasons, comes a crisp new catalog en-route to my mailbox. This is no secret, but I love JCrew swimwear. Always have, always will. Here's why: There are few things more classic than a solid color block swimsuit (two-piece or one) and there are endless mix and match possibilities available.

I have maybe 7 JCrew suits in my closet, (many of which are from years and years ago) but in reality -- I have about three times that. I love to mix-and-match this color top with that patterned bottom, or two different colors, the same color ... it just makes me happy. And you never have to worry of being boring - not one trip to the pool or beach is the same. And honestly, is there anything more summer than seersucker (pictured above)? Goes fabulously with white and navy.

I've written about her spaces before, and this is why: she has a phenomenal eye for composition and effortlessly combines styles and time periods. In this particular image the tile flooring, antique kitchen table, and butcher block counters combine to create what is quite possibly, the most beautiful example of farmhouse chic I've seen in quite some time. Good Morning! It's officially spring in my book, especially since I slept with my window cracked and awoke to the sound of chirping birds and sea gulls. And it's sunnier than ever! These wedding arrangements are so naturally composed and artfully bound -- a simple hemp string keeps the bride's bouquet intact. When most of us think wedding flowers, we think a certain kind and color to be used throughout - but this is not the only option. Sometimes it's best to keep things simple and natural.

Weekend Wish List: [Travel Edition]

I don't exactly know why, but something has caused me to go a little travel crazy lately. For the past few weeks, I've come dangerously close to booking a 12-day tour of southern Italy that I could never afford - at a time that I could never take off. This is what I've been doing at every free moment this week. Researching itineraries and searching for flights. One small problem: trips like these are incredibly expensive. No way could this be possible at this barely post-college point in my life. But once I learned exactly how much I'd have to save, I created a spreadsheet and opened a savings account for one thing only: seeing the world.

Once I get there, I'll have to be ready. This is the inspiration for this week's weekend wish list. Above are all the items I'm dreaming of bringing with me, once the opportunity presents itself.

1) A Nikon camera to capture every second
2) An electric Smythson passport cover
3) Patagonia's Critical Mass shoulder bag and

I love this room found via Pinterest. It's so casual yet sophisticated - and who wouldn't love to come home to a bouquet of freshly-cut roses? Usually I stray away from a cluster of photographs on a wall, but the colors work perfectly with the bright pillows on the couch and the universal whites. And they're all different genres of art, which I absolutely love.

Kelly Wearstler's message about rooms having a sense of humor really resonates with me. Often, taking interiors too seriously can make a space feel stuffy and unwelcoming. Not this one! It's light, girly and full of casual accessories.

Who doesn't love a clean, organized workspace? Though mine might not be this pristine, I desperately wish it were this well styled. Love the rug, desk, and shelf of framed items. Not to mention the bright yellow fireplace and orange bicycle in the background! So pretty. Tomorrow is Thursday! This week is flying.

Today's theme is simplicity! In all aspects of life, not just fashion. Stendhal is a 19th century French writer whose thoughts on keeping things basic and beautiful inspired me this morning. And the fashionista above personifies it. With a clean blue oxford, tortoise shell sun glasses and a basic black vest, she stands out from the bustlilng NYFW crowd.

Hair Envy: [The Basic Braid]

Forever envious of ethereal, effortlessly beautiful looks like these. I do braid my hair on occasion, but why is it that it never looks quite right? But maybe that's the point? Anyway - these ladies got it right. So I'm trying to incorporate this look more than I have, and I'm brushing up on my side french and fishtailing skills. Don't these simple styles adds polish? Exactly what I need these days.

Bobby Pin Fairy

Hi, all - I'm loving this very true-to-life illustration. I always feel like I have more than enough (I just bought a pack didn't I?), then POOF! They're all mysteriously missing. I swear there's a bobby pin fairy sleuthing around my apartment and desk at work, snatching every one from coat pockets and purse compartments. Much more to come tomorrow ...

1) Barbara Berry designs the most beautiful interiors, fabrics, wallpapers. This pillow is definitively Barbara, and one I'd love to bring home.
2) I wear J Brand jeans all the time. Love that 35'' inseam.
3) Oak trees surrounded my house growing up in Wisconsin. I have a few leaves framed in my room at home.
4) I wear Crabtree and Evelyn's Lilly of the Valley everyday.
5) Tory Burch can do no wrong in my book.
6) Peonies are my favorite flower. When the bright purple one growing in my yard would bloom, it meant summer.
7) Roberto Coin makes very delicate jewelry. I wear this necklace from my mom for high school graduation, every day.
8) La Source hand cream from Crabtree and Evelyn saves my hands in the wintertime.
9) I love impressionism, and this particular shot comes from the wonderful Lilly Pulitzer.
10) OPI's Bubble Bath, Second Honeymoon, and Shorts Story are wearable and feminine. Shorts Story is always on my toes, Bubble Bath and Second Honeymoon for my fingers.

Room Of The Day: [Bright Patterns & Sunlight]

Good morning! Today's room of the day incorporates a slew of patterns and styles, but still feels fresh and inviting. What do you think? I love the fabric used for window coverings, the simplicity of the bed spread and the choice of lighting in this room.

Did you notice the rug below? It's a very unique choice (not sure I would have put them all together like this) but it works! The daily lesson: don't be afraid to mix colors, styles and patterns! It seems scary, maybe not advised in some instances, but your design bravery can certainly pay off as it does here.

Scenes From the Weekend

Mollie says "stop blogging and play with me!" I'm officially calling it a night, time to snuggle with my favorite little red head and watch Cupcake Wars on Food network. Have a good weekend? Me too.

Heading back to the windy city tomorrow afternoon, hopefully without any ice storm troubles. Winter is really getting on my nerves. I knew that little burst of springy weather was just a ruse from mother nature. Maybe this will be the last it? I'm crossing my fingers.

*Happy Sunday, all! Please welcome my first guest blogger Tess Tyrrell of Tea Time With Tess. She's a great friend of mine, fellow Chicagoan, and fabulously fun shopping partner. She's agreed to share some of her 'musts' and answer a few of my questions about her style icons, fashion sense and guilty pleasures. Enjoy!

Hi efrantz readers! I'm so honored to be doing a guest post here! A little history about myself, and your author, Liz, before we get started. Liz and I met freshman year of college at the University of Iowa. We lived on the same dorm floor and I knew pretty quickly that I could be great friends with her…once I got over my envy for her amazing hair. As luck would have it we ended up in the same, horrendous class, Tech & Society, which we both had to take in order to fulfill our science credits. I ended up actually looking forward to class because I got to sit with Liz and spend a few hours gossiping and chatting – we were eerily similar – and got along famously. Then, unfortunately (for me) Liz made the decision to transfer to University of Wisconsin-Madison, and I bid farewell to one of the most genuine people I had ever met. Strangely enough, our paths crossed again five years later, when I spotted Liz having lunch at the Chicago Tribune.

Liz was interning for Chicago Magazine and I was just starting out in the advertising world. We sat for an hour catching up and have since become quick friends here in Chicago. She has such a classic style to her and when I found out she had a blog I spent 3 hours reading all of her tips and taking detailed notes! I too, have a collection of ramblings at Tea Time With Tess. I would love to get to know all of you – because if you are anything like Liz, I will probably adore you!

EF: What most inspires you?

TT: For fashion, I draw inspiration from movies, tv shows, and magainzes. I know what I like and what looks good on me, so when I see an outfit on a celebrity that I life, I try and recreate it with what I have in my own closet. Lately, I have been watching “Better With You” (comes on right before Modern Family), mainly because I am obsessed with all of Maddie’s outfits. Right now, she is my biggest inspiration. Next month, I’ll probably move on to whoever wins the Bachelor.

EF: Who is your style icon & why?

TT: My style icon is Reese Witherspoon. It’s not very original, I know, but she knocks it out of the park for me. She is always pulled together, crisp, and smart about her outfit choices. She is effortless, classic, and timeless. Everything I want to be.

EF: What combination of colors are you most drawn to?

TT: Navy blue and white. I die for navy blue and white. I like these colors in my closet and in my house. Navy blue is actually quite a neutral color and when you work with navy blue and white as your base, almost any accent color works – red, green, yellow, gray being my favorite accent colors for the combo.

EF: Where would you most like to travel?

TT: Well, I’m actually leaving for Spain in a few weeks, so that’s on my mind, but the trip I most want to take in the next few years is to Napa Valley, CA. I feel like a trip to Napa Valley would include all of my favorite things; Beautiful hotels, gorgeous scenery, top restaurants, cheese, and wine.

EF: What is on your bookmark list?

TT: My daily blogs are a combination of women who discuss interior design, fashion, and babies. My favorite blogs are those people who can seamlessly combine all three: Honey We're Home, Urban Grace, Ten June Blog, Blue Eyed Bride, and Deliciously Organized.

EF: What is your favorite place to shop?

TT: I am a shopper. Always have been. I enjoy the hunt and I don’t mind spending hours in Tj.Maxx, Home Goods, and Nordstrom Rack searching for the buried treasure. Some of my most favorite pieces have been picked up at those stores but I do have to be in the right mindset and have copious amounts of energy. When I’m not in the mood to hunt, this is my go-to list:

Work pants: Gap

Coats: Burberry

Shoes: It’s a tie….Tory Burch & Sooft

Jeans: Hudson

Shorts: J.Crew

Button Downs: J.Crew

Blouses: Anthropologie

Dresses: Diane Von Furstenberg

Sweaters: Ann Taylor

My must have items (shown above):

1) Nook reader with Lilly Pulitzer cover. I’m an avid reader! The pink Lilly case makes me not miss having pretty book covers to look at.

2) Bliss meltaways. A necessary evil.

3) Cakebread wine is my favorite, but any red will do the trick.

4) Benefit illuminator…or as I like to call it, my “hangover eraser”

5) Us Weekly subscription. My favorite thing about Thursday’s.

6) Cynthia Rowley Candles. If I’m at home, they have to be burning.

And my musts in my closet:

7) These three items, 8) a good pair of jeans, and 9) a white button down would allow to survive in the fashion jungle….for months.

Accessories to Envy: [Crystal and Bows]

I have hardly any statement jewelry pieces, so I've started thinking items like this one might be exactly what I need to jump start my wardrobe. Do you wear the same items everyday, too? I have a few rings (both family heirlooms) and an understated, delicate silver necklace I never, ever remove.

Though I love them all, this Carrington Crystal Bow Necklace via JCrew got me thinking. Are items like these the secret to adding just the right amount of polish? I'd pair it with a simple white tee, dark jeans and knee-high leather boots. Maybe a navy blazer for work?

Event Inspiration Board: [A Classic Pallate]

Following tradition with bright whites, classic colors and fresh summer flowers. These scenes are beautiful, and tonight I'm inspired by the simplicity of a black and white wedding. I'm always thinking about possible color combs - peach and robins egg, tangerine and buttercream - but there's something so romantic about the basics.

Collapsing into bed soon, then home tomorrow! Hope you're having your 'perfect night' too.
